Lyrax

The god of dreams and illusions

Appearance and Personality

Much like their favorite Higher Beings, the Changelings, Lyrax' appearance can vary wildly on any given day. Known for being a trickster and mischiefmaker, they enjoy spending their time in places like the Verdant Wilds, disuised as various creatures and leading travelers astay. Usually Lyrax gives their victims at least a hint on how to get back, not meaning to cause harm, but there are still many who found their deaths after having the misfortune of meeting Lyrax.

Lyrax similarly enjoys playing pranks on their fellow gods, in particular Kalia and Lunara, seeing it as their responsibility to keep them on their toes and not let them have egos that are too big. And while those two usually think Lyrax is a charming character and even often enjoy their antics, the opinions of the other gods are very divided. Some, such as Calzareth and Divara, agree with Lunara and Kalia, finding them generally endearing if slightly annoying, others such as Ithron and Xalthera fully despise anything Lyrax is up to. These latter ones are of course the ones Lyrax enjoys messing with the most. They always look forward to the next blood moon, planning many pranks in the meantime.

History

Shortly after the first Changelings settled in the Verdant Wilds, Lyrax awakened and was immediately taken by the mysterious city shifting and morphing before them. Seeing the deep importance they placed on dreams, they quickly became interested in them as well, using dreams to create shared illusions and giving glimpses of different realms.

They often appeared within people's dreams, showing them different realities, glimpses of the future and many other fantastical things. Stories of what Lyrax had shown people quickly spread through all of Moonspire, allowing people to see beyond the edges of reality and giving them hope for the future. This would eventually lead to many traditions of storytelling being born around the world, all through the images people have seen in their dreams.

Once god that becamse particularly interested in the power of dreams and illusions was Xalthera, a seeker of knowledge herself. She sought out Lyrax in order to learn more about realms of dreams and their power to glimpse into the future. But instead of giving explanations, Lyrax only gave her more questions. Frustrated she could not understand dreams and illusions, she often returned to Lyrax with more and more questions. Each and every time, after a long talk, Xalthrea left again, usually not having any of them answered in a satisfying way, and often with many riddles and half-truths she then spent until their next meeting trying to untangle. As much as Xalthera was frustrated with Lyrax, she also secretly admired them, and could not keep her mind of their riddles, the two soon being bound by a web of truths and lies no one but them could understand.

When Ryxos' whispers reached Lyrax, they were immediately very responsive, taking them as warnings from the future, similar to the ones they have seen in dreams. This influence then quickly spread to Xalthera as well, trusting Lyrax' words more than she would admit and falling for Ryxos' lies just as fast. Lyrax was then the one to guide Xalthera and Calzareth to Fearyn who had been in hiding for many years but allowed himself to be found after he knew the three of them were on his side and he needed their help. During the final battle in Lunara's palace, Lyrax found himself standing against Noctara, one of the few gods that remained on Lunara's side. They managed to subdue her, allowing Kalia and Faeryn to cast their binding spell on Lunara as planned, and while they did have the chance to kill her, something kept Lyrax from landing the final blow. Maybe it was an unspoken connection between dreams and the night skies, or maybe it was Lunara trying to protect her last remaining friend and follower.
